Spring Gala
The University of San Francisco honored accomplished alumni and friends during the annual Spring Gala April 18.
The Alumni of the Year for 2009 came from one family with extraordinary connections to USF and an ongoing record of exceptional service. The Wall brothers, C. Allen Wall ’47, Richard Wall ’56, and Robert Rossi Wall ’54 (who has since passed away, see his obit), took the stage with pride.
The Wall family remains engaged with USF, lending support through the Wall Family Business Endowed Scholarship and the Rev. P. Carlo Rossi, S.J. Endowed Chair for Entrepreneurship.
The Recognition for Public Service Award went to the Hon. Martin Jenkins, JD ’80, who has dedicated his career to resolving conflicts from an ethical standpoint. Judy Miner, EdD ’82, took home the Edward J. Griffin Award for excellence for her promotion of inclusive education. A graduate of Lone Mountain College, she is president of Foothill College.
The Alessandri Service Award was given to Eva Monroe ’72 for her work with the USF Center for the Pacific Rim board and gala and the San Francisco Regional Council. David Philpott ’93, MPA ’97, was honored for his efforts with the annual alumni Thanksgiving food drive.
Presented to non-alumni, the Cable Car Award was given to three individuals linked by USF athletics, Joe Hallisy, Helen Mineau, and Pat Olson. Hallisy has been the public address announcer, at War Memorial Gym, for USF's home basketball games for nearly a quarter of a century. Mineau has been a familiar face at Dons games since her time as a student at Lone Mountain College, and Olson has called, over the radio, men's basketball games at home and away since 1991.

Golden Alumni Reunion
Alumni and friends gathered on campus Oct. 3 for the USF Golden Alumni Reunion. Special recognition was given to those alumni celebrating their 55th reunion and 60th reunion. The final part of the program focused on inducting the members of the Class of 1959 into the Golden Alumni on the occasion of their 50th reunion.
Continuing a tradition, the Class of 1959 also commemorated the reunion by presenting the university with a donation. This year's check totaled more than $890,000.

Start Your Engines
More than 40 vintage race cars and assorted memorabilia were on display Sept. 20 during a Southern California Regional Council event sponsored by Tom (’61) and Sharon Malloy.
The private collection, owned by Tom Malloy (shown in photo with foot on car), features a variety of cars, including Indy, Formula 5000, Can-Am, and several specialized street cars from 1925 to 2008.
In addition to viewing the collection, alumni and parents also heard from USF President Stephen A. Privett, S.J. on university-wide updates, including student enrollment, financial strength, and the Center for Science and Innovation.
USF senior Lina Calderon-Morin, the recipient of a scholarship from the Southern California Regional Council, also spoke about her USF experience and how the scholarship has helped her.
Young Alums Welcome Newest Alumni
More than 100 young alumni attended a June 11 event at Johnny Foley's in San Francisco to welcome the newest members of USF's alumni ranks.
Sip, Savor
About 60 alumni, family, and friends gathered at the Jesuit Retreat Center of Los Altos Aug. 24 to sip wine and mingle with fellow alumni during a wine tasting hosted by the Peninsula/Silicon Valley Regional Chapter.
