Feb. 17th, Wednesday at 5:00 p.m., USF PrideLaw and distinguished guest speakers Dan Powell and Michael Nava discussed the history of the federal challenge, the political and constitutional issues raised by the litigation, and the legal and social consequences of the possible outcomes, particularly at the U.S. Supreme Court level. Michael Nava is a California Supreme Court judicial staff attorney currently working for California Supreme Court Justice Carlos Moreno. He is also the author of Created Equal: Why Gay Rights Matter to America. Dan Powell is a California Deputy Attorney General speaking in his capacity as a board member of Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom (BALIF), and clerked for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stevens.

The ‘Prop 8 Update’ panel discussion was November 18 2010.
Panelists included Jeremy M. Goldman, partner at Boies, Schiller & Flexner LLP and counsel for plaintiffs; Christopher F. Stoll, senior staff attorney at the National Center for Lesbian Rights; Daniel Powell, deputy attorney general from California Attorney General Jerry Brown's office; and Mollie Lee, deputy city attorney from San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera’s office. The panel was moderated by Julie Nice, one of our very own Constitutional law professors.
Panel members discussed the impact of Judge Vaughn Walker’s findings of fact and conclusions of law in Perry v. Schwarzenegger (located at 704 F. Supp. 2d 921). In addition, the panelists discussed some of the issues surrounding the appeal to the 9th Circuit by proponents of Proposition 8.
