2010 Off-Site Pacific Meeting

Since the official location of the Pacific meeting of the APA (the Westin / St. Francis) is in a labor dispute, the University of San Francisco offers alternative meeting spaces. The following information should address most questions speakers and visitors of the alternative location might have.

Off Site Schedule

Here is the schedule. We have 36 sessions and quite a strong program with sessions spread out through the four days. This should generate a good audience for all panels. Of course, we all hope you will support one another by attending as many talks as you can. We will also encourage our students (and ourselves) to attend the off-site conference.

Last but not least, in order to promote attendance we have added receptions and cocktail hours to the schedule.

Location

The off-site conference will take place in Kalmanovitz Hall (not Fromm Hall as suggested earlier). We will have a business center (with internet, copier and printer access). Coffee/tea service will be provided in the mornings and afternoons and water service throughout the conference. This will be free of charge to individuals and organizations. Just come over, present, hang out, and enjoy!

Kalmanovitz Hall is ADA accessible, and it is located on Fulton Ave. The building is situated in the lower campus, which is straddled by Turk Blvd. and Fulton Ave. A Muni bus line runs along each of these avenues, the 31 for Turk and the 5 for Fulton. See the attached MUNI map and the directions below. Kalmanovitz Hall is across a field, next to a conspicuous and beautiful church and it can be visually identified by its beige / yellowish color and tall windows. We will place adequate signs outside of the building. And within Kalmanovitz Hall, we will have a table/booth staffed by USF faculty or students throughout the entire conference period.

We have a campus cafeteria near the conference building. And there are various eateries within walking distance. We'll provide a map for those eateries at the conference.

Directions by Bus

The easiest two bus options are lines 5 and 31

The bus fare is $2.00 cash (quarters are accepted)

Both buses run about every 10 minutes.

The 5 would be the easiest and drop off the closest to Kalmanovitz.

When exiting the West Inn / St. Francis take a right on Powell and walk towards Market Street. Pass Geary and after about 4 blocks you should see the cable car turn about and the Gap store on the left. The bus stop you want is directly in front of the Gap, both of the busses stop there.

If you take line 5 the stop in front of USF is Parker at the top of the hill and right next to the St. Ignatius Church. Kalmanovitz is on Fulton to the right of the church (across the field). This bus takes about 30 minutes

The stop for line 31 is Chabot, right in front of the stairs that lead to Lone Mountain (the upper part of the campus). Do NOT go up the stairs, but walk down Chabot one block and continue straight onto the lower campus. If you keep going straight you will see Kalmanovitz in front of you. This bus takes about 40 minutes.

We will have signs posted, but I also strongly recommend to print the campus map below.

Taxi

The cost for a taxi from downtown to USF ranges from about 15 to 20 dollars.

You can ask the driver to drop you off at the church at the University of San Francisco.

Here are some taxi companies:

Green Taxi (415) 626-4733

Yellow Cab (415) 333-3333

Desoto Cab Co. (415) 970-1300

Address

If you want to mapquest, the address of USF is

Alternative Lodging

Many will seek lodging at a non-boycotted hotel in downtown. But you or your colleagues might consider hotels near USF. Here is a website that lists most of them:

http://www.usfca.edu/residence_life/sgh/hotels.html

And here is A Union Hotel Guide for San Francisco

Probably most of the hotels on the USF website are smaller hotels or bed-and-breakfasts. We often house our colloquia speakers at the Stanyan Hotel or the Montecristo. An alternative to both USF and downtown is Japantown/Filmore district which lies roughly between the two conference sites, though a bit closer to downtown. Also, San Francisco hold many delights beyond the downtown area, many of which are near USF. Check out internet info on the Haight-Ashbury district, Golden Gate Park, the Presidio, the ocean, Japantown, Fillmore, Inner Sunset and Richmond districts.

Please contact Gerard Kuperus (gkuperus@usfca.edu) if you have any questions about the off-site conference.

Thank you and on behalf of the philosophy department we are looking forward to welcoming you at USF!
